We spend about a third of our lives in bed. We wash our sheets and pillowcases regularly, but how often do we clean the mattress itself? Even under a clean sheet, mattresses absorb sweat, dead skin cells, body oils, and environmental dust. This creates a perfect environment for dust mites to thrive, which can trigger allergies and asthma. Sanitising your mattress is a crucial step for healthy sleep hygiene.
The Threat of Dust Mites and Allergens
Dust mites are microscopic arachnids that feed on shed human skin cells. While they don’t bite, their waste products contain protein allergens that trigger sneezing, itchy eyes, eczema, and respiratory issues. Deep sanitising destroys these pests and removes their allergens from the mattress fibres.
How to Deodorise and Clean Your Mattress
You can refresh your mattress easily at home with these steps:
- Strip the bed and wash all bedding at a high temperature (60°C).
- Vacuum the entire mattress surface using the upholstery attachment to remove dust and skin flakes.
- Sift a generous layer of baking soda over the mattress. Let it sit for at least 2 hours. The baking soda will absorb odors and draw out moisture.
- Vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly.
