Tackling Grout: How to Scrub and Whiten Tile Joints

Tile grout is porous, meaning it absorbs oils, soap scum, and dirty water easily. Over time, clean white grout lines in your shower or kitchen splashback can turn dark grey or develop mould, making your entire room look dirty. Whitening tile grout lines is a key part of deep cleaning. Here is the best way to scrub and brighten your grout.

The Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda Solution

This is a highly effective, non-toxic grout cleaner. Baking soda acts as a mild abrasive, while hydrogen peroxide is a natural oxygen bleach that lifts stains and kills mould spores:

  1. Mix half a cup of baking soda with a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide to form a paste. Add a teaspoon of dish soap.
  2. Apply the paste to the grout lines and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Scrub the grout lines vigorously using a stiff grout brush or an old electric toothbrush.
  4. Rinse with warm water and wipe dry.

Maintaining Clean Grout

Once your grout is clean, consider applying a grout sealer. This creates a protective barrier that repels water and prevents oils and dirt from penetrating the pores, making your weekly wash much easier.
