Sofa Maintenance: How to Clean and Care for Fabric Upholstery

Your sofa is likely one of the most used pieces of furniture in your home. From family movie nights to afternoon naps, it handles a lot of wear, spills, and dust. Over time, fabric upholstery gathers dust, oils from skin, pet dander, and food crumbs. To protect your investment and keep your living room fresh, follow these upholstery care steps.

Understand Your Fabric Codes

Before applying any liquid cleaner, look for the manufacturer’s care label (usually found under the seat cushions):

  • W: You can use water-based cleaning agents.
  • S: Use solvent-based cleaners only (dry clean). Do not use water.
  • WS: Safe to use either water-based or solvent-based cleaners.
  • X: Vacuum only. No liquid cleaners.

Weekly Vacuuming is Key

Dust particles act like tiny sandpaper blades on fabric fibres. Every time you sit, you grind this dust into the weave, wearing down the fabric. Use the upholstery brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to clean the surface, cushions, and crevices weekly.

Spot Cleaning Spills

If a spill occurs, blot it immediately with a clean dry towel. For “W” coded fabrics, mix a few drops of dish soap with warm water, apply to a cloth, and gently dab the stain from the outside edge inward. Rinse with a damp cloth and blot dry.
